The Beginning of a New Era: Introducing the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry
Sunday, 05 September 2010

We’re thrilled to share with you some exciting news:  on September 1, 2010 the former Youth Ministry Office (YMO) of the Archdiocese of Vancouver officially became the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry (OYYAM).

As you are aware, Gerard Garcia was hired as the part-time Consultant for Young Adult Ministry, the first for the archdiocese, back in June.  Later that month, Archbishop Miller approved the name change of our office as we looked to best reflect our expanded services to youth and young adults in the archdiocese.

For youth ministry, the OYYAM will continue to provide parish youth ministry formation through training and support.  For young adult ministry, the OYYAM will aid in the development of young adult ministry through connecting, convening, and consulting.

Old Spice: Youth Ministry Style
Saturday, 28 August 2010

Here's a creative take on the famous Old Spice commercials, from the talent show at the Youth Ministry Office's Searching in the Spirit 2010 at Camp Jubilee.

I must admit, I was slightly surprised when Dylan walked into the room without a shirt on. However, I wasn't surprised with the creativity and originality of Dylan, Chris, Jeremy, Neil and Josh.

For another angle of the skit, see Gerard's video on youtube here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLgJ9T5ZDzo

Top 20 Catholic Youth Ministry Blogs
Sunday, 22 August 2010

Thanks to my friend D. Scott Miller of the Archdiocese of Baltimore for including me on his recent list of "Top 20 Catholic Youth Ministry Blogs " on his website The Catholic Youth Ministry Blog , considered the "411 of Catholic Youth Ministry."  Also on the list are youth ministry stand-outs Bob Rice, Mike Patin, and Mark Oestreicher, to name a few.  I'm excited and humbled to be recognized on the list!

Scott and I have been fast friends ever since we met back in the summer of 2003 in Washington, DC.  In fact, on the day we first met, we ended up with some immediate bonding time as we changed a flat tire on his car.  The rest, as they say, is history.

We've engaged in some good-natured ribbing over the past few years, especially with respect to our respective countries.  And I was part of one of Scott's most memorable projects:  the April Fools joke of 2009 .

It's been a big month for Scott, as his website just celebrated it's 6 year anniversary.  As well, Scott has been hired as the Director of the Division of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, a position he's held on an interim basis for the past year.  Now it's official!

Congrats again Scott, and thanks for the support.  You ain't so bad after all.

Jumpin' Around at Gameworks in Las Vegas
Sunday, 22 August 2010

See my (relatively) decent attempt at the Jumpin' Fantasy game at Gameworks in Las Vegas.

18 successful jumps isn't bad...especially for a guy 15 years past his prime (insert your own definition of "prime").

My 3 Favourite Prayers (Prayer Meme)
Friday, 20 August 2010

I’ve been tagged a couple of times (by Oddwalk Ministries and Gene Monterstelli) in a recent prayer meme going around the internet, in which we are to name our 3 favourite prayers.  Many prominent (much more so than me) bloggers have weighed in, including Mike Patin, Scott Miller, and Roy Petitfils.

And for those of you who are unsure, the term “meme” is used to describe a concept that spreads swiftly via the internet.  Don’t be embarrassed if you didn’t know.  I thought “meme” was the opposite of “youyou.”

Anyway, on to my 3 favourite prayers:

YouthLeader 2010: Dropping the "Clay" Egg
Sunday, 15 August 2010

Here's a bit of footage from the "Egg Drop" eggs-ercise during the Planning Skills session at this year's YouthLeader.

One of the groups came out of their shell and named their egg after me.  Their kind gesture cracked me up, though it had me leaving a bit scrambled.

The "Clay" egg met its inevitable fate on the 3rd drop (15 feet onto concrete) but on the sunny side, the first 2 drops went over easy.

And that's no yolk!
