The Beginning of a New Era: Introducing the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry PDF Print E-mail
Just Me
Sunday, 05 September 2010

We’re thrilled to share with you some exciting news:  on September 1, 2010 the former Youth Ministry Office (YMO) of the Archdiocese of Vancouver officially became the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry (OYYAM).

As you are aware, Gerard Garcia was hired as the part-time Consultant for Young Adult Ministry, the first for the archdiocese, back in June.  Later that month, Archbishop Miller approved the name change of our office as we looked to best reflect our expanded services to youth and young adults in the archdiocese.

For youth ministry, the OYYAM will continue to provide parish youth ministry formation through training and support.  For young adult ministry, the OYYAM will aid in the development of young adult ministry through connecting, convening, and consulting.

Top 20 Catholic Youth Ministry Blogs PDF Print E-mail
Just Me
Sunday, 22 August 2010

Thanks to my friend D. Scott Miller of the Archdiocese of Baltimore for including me on his recent list of "Top 20 Catholic Youth Ministry Blogs " on his website The Catholic Youth Ministry Blog , considered the "411 of Catholic Youth Ministry."  Also on the list are youth ministry stand-outs Bob Rice, Mike Patin, and Mark Oestreicher, to name a few.  I'm excited and humbled to be recognized on the list!

Scott and I have been fast friends ever since we met back in the summer of 2003 in Washington, DC.  In fact, on the day we first met, we ended up with some immediate bonding time as we changed a flat tire on his car.  The rest, as they say, is history.

We've engaged in some good-natured ribbing over the past few years, especially with respect to our respective countries.  And I was part of one of Scott's most memorable projects:  the April Fools joke of 2009 .

It's been a big month for Scott, as his website just celebrated it's 6 year anniversary.  As well, Scott has been hired as the Director of the Division of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, a position he's held on an interim basis for the past year.  Now it's official!

Congrats again Scott, and thanks for the support.  You ain't so bad after all.

My 3 Favourite Prayers (Prayer Meme) PDF Print E-mail
Faith
Friday, 20 August 2010

I’ve been tagged a couple of times (by Oddwalk Ministries and Gene Monterstelli) in a recent prayer meme going around the internet, in which we are to name our 3 favourite prayers.  Many prominent (much more so than me) bloggers have weighed in, including Mike Patin, Scott Miller, and Roy Petitfils.

And for those of you who are unsure, the term “meme” is used to describe a concept that spreads swiftly via the internet.  Don’t be embarrassed if you didn’t know.  I thought “meme” was the opposite of “youyou.”

Anyway, on to my 3 favourite prayers:

Happy 9th Birthday Sean: Like Father, Like Son PDF Print E-mail
Family
Monday, 02 August 2010
Sean turns 9 years old today, and it’s hard to believe how quickly he’s growing: physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. Obviously, I love all of my children abundantly and equally, but I’ve always felt a special connection with Sean, likely because he’s my first child.

Thus, it wasn’t too hard to find 9 similarities between us, in celebration of his 9th birthday. And as always with these types of lists, there’s good, bad and ugly:

1. Sports. We both love playing them and watching them, and we both name the Canucks and Lions as our favourite teams. Our favourite thing to do is play street hockey in our neighbourhood. The practicing definitely paid off this year as Sean enjoyed a successful foray into ball hockey (making it all the way to the Provincials) and I have my roller hockey semi-final game later tonight.

When Stereotypes Don't Pan Out PDF Print E-mail
Just Me

It was one of the lazier days of our family vacation on Wednesday, our last full day in the LA area. So with our trips to Disneyland complete, we did our best American Idol wanna-be impression and went to Hollywood. After a quick drive up and down Hollywood Boulevard, we headed into the hills towards the famous Hollywood sign.

As an aside, it was both comical and surprising that the GPS in our van actually had “Hollywood Sign” programmed as an attraction. When we got to the suggested address, it was actually someone’s house…haha.

The Good (and Rather Unimposing) Samaritan PDF Print E-mail

Saturday, 17 July 2010
Today, I got to help a brother out.

It all started earlier this afternoon as Gail and the kids waited in the comfortably air-conditioned van while I ran across the busy intersection of Sepulveda and Vermont in Torrance, California in 90 degree heat. I was on my way to meet a complete stranger in the Food4Less parking lot, as he bought my extra Disneyland tickets from me through Craigslist (that’s another blog on its own!). As I had a few minutes to spare, I headed towards Burger King to use the washroom. That’s when I noticed that a big jeep had run out of gas in a left-hand turn lane…thankfully not yet in the busy intersection.

You’ve Got a Friend in Me…and in Woody…and in Jesus PDF Print E-mail
Faith
Saturday, 10 July 2010

Gail and I took the kids to see Toy Story 3 this Thursday on our 10 year wedding anniversary. Four of the five of us were completely blown away by the show (Kayla, not Jake, slept through most of it), making it a wonderful way to spend a “lazy day” on vacation.

I was extremely impressed by the entire movie, as it was a seamless weave of action and emotion. In particular, I was struck by the number of Christian themes in the movies, whether intentional or not.

At the end of the story, when Andy was reluctantly giving Woody to Bonnie the little girl, he described Woody in this way: “He'll never give up on you... ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what.”
