#Roadto40 Roast Highlights: Clay’s 40th Birthday

Here’s a highlight video of my #Roadto40 Roast held at the Hog Shack Cook House in Richmond on Saturday, June 28, 2014. I’ve condensed 2 hours of roasts down to 30 minutes.

I’ve never had so much fun having my self-esteem completely shredded. And I can’t really complain about the birthday serenade by Marie and Arielle (right at the start of the video). And thanks to Nicole for the awesome cake!

The speakers touch on all aspects of my life, from growing up to youth ministry to social media to the Canucks to YouTube videos to my friendship with Matt Maher haha. The complete list of speakers (in order of appearance in the video is):

-Gerard Garcia and Rich Chen
-Krissy Chua Litam
-Derek Hume
-Joyce Santos
-Craig Boyd
-Joseph San Jose
-Christina Estrada
-Oggy Luistro
-Arielle Tuliao
-Jason and Mike McBurney
-Jason Imoo

You can see photos from the event here.

Big thanks to Allan and John of the Hog Shack for hosting us!

The Culmination of my #Roadto40: Looking Back at my 30s

40 shirtYesterday I turned 40 years old and thus it was the culmination of my #Roadto40 that I started exactly 5 months ago in January.  In that blog post, I said that “My short-term goal is to lose 10 to 15 pounds.  My long-term goal is to hit my 40th birthday in June much healthier.”

I’m happy to say that I’ve lost the weight that I wanted to and I’m eating better and exercising regularly…thanks to Craig and his team of trainers at Precision Athletics.  We have less junk food in the house now, which is really good for the kids.  I still need to get better with my sleeping habits; it’s admittedly a hard habit to change given that I’ve been a night owl since my high school days.

I had a lot of time to reflect this past weekend.  Not just on the last 5 months, but the last decade overall.  I think reflecting is a natural thing to do (especially when hitting certain milestones such as a 40th birthday) and thus I’d like to share with you what I believe are 5 of the most prominent memories of my thirties (ranging from June 2004 to June 2014).

Everything is Bigger in Texas: My Return to Fort Worth

babesToday I returned to Fort Worth, Texas for the second consecutive year.  In fact, it’s my 3rd time to Texas in the past 4 years – I spoke at a youth conference back in the summer of 2011.  Once again, I am here as a trainer for YouthLeader and I’m excited to work with the teens and youth ministry leaders in this wonderful community.  I was blessed by my time here last year, and I’m looking forward to more of the same this time around.

The day started off well as I was able to secure emergency exit row seats on both legs of my flight.  Thus, I was in row 2 of the small plane from Vancouver to Portland and I had all of row 16 to myself on the longer Portland to Dallas flight.  At least I thought I had the whole row to myself.  But after I woke up from the first of many quick naps, there was a woman sitting in my row.  Reminded me of when I wake up after nodding off – I mean, after reflecting with my eyes closed – in the adoration chapel.

My #Roadto40: Three Months Down, Two Months to Go

I lift some of these...mostly the lighter ones
I lift some of these…mostly the lighter ones

Last month, I was named Precision Athletics’ Client of the Month for March.  I have 2 distinct theories on how this happened:

a)     They were impressed with my results since I started attending the small group training sessions back in January

b)     They had exhausted virtually their entire client base and fell to me on their list of people to profile

In all seriousness, I was flattered that they asked me and I happily filled out the small Q & A for their newsletter (I’ve included it below).

As I write this, I’m exactly 2 months away from my 40th birthday on June 22.  I’ve increased my workouts from 3 days a week to 5 days a week.  Now, in addition to my 360 Degree Abs small group training sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, I’m attending a “Core Circuit” class over the Tuesday lunch hour and a Boot Camp over the Thursday lunch hour.  I’ve learned so much from these two additional days…mostly that I still have a lot of work to do!  I’ll save some of those stories for my next blog though.

My #Roadto40: I Found an Ab (Results After One Month)

This thing hurts
This thing hurts

This past Monday marked the one-month mark of my exercise and fitness regimen on my #Roadto40.  So, much like she did on January 22 of this year, Katie of Precision Athletics took my measurements with the help of some cold and sharp calipers.  The measurements only took a couple of minutes:  she would name a body part, hook up the calipers to pinch said body part, I would grimace and hold back my tears, she would remove the calipers, and I would pretend it didn’t hurt.

The final results showed some decent progress:  in one month I lost 11 pounds, shed 4 inches off of my waist, and reduced my body fat by over 4%.

I knew that I had lost some weight over the month as my watch and wedding started to slide a bit and I moved to the next notch on my belt buckle.  My double chin is less pronounced (it’s more like a 1.5 chin now) and both my face and waist are a tad slimmer.
