Stanley Cup Wager: Youth Ministry Style

On the eve of the game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Vancouver Canucks and the Boston Bruins, I made a quick visit to the webpage for the Archdiocese of Boston, and in particular its Office for the New Evangelization of Youth and Young Adults (ONE).  Within a few seconds, I found who I was looking for:  the Director, Fr. Matt Williams.  Check out their website and his blog here.

I sent Fr. Matt a quick email, inviting him to participate in a friendly wager.  I was quite confident, as I’ve had success with friendly youth ministry wagers in the past (including Oddwalk Ministries putting together a video using the word “eh” repeatedly after the Canadians beat the Americans for the gold medal in men’s hockey in the 2010 Winter Olympics last February).

Fr. Matt and I have never met, yet to his credit he happily and willingly accepted my fun (and hopefully) harmless proposal.  After a couple of emails back and forth, we decided on this:

If the Canucks win the Stanley Cup, Fr. Matt will send me some New England clam chowder (or clam chowdah as they say in Boston) along with some Boston baked beans (candy).  As well, he’ll have to post on his blog a 45-second video praising the Canucks and the city of Vancouver.

If Boston somehow wins the Stanley Cup, I will send Fr. Matt some BC smoked salmon and some Canadian bacon.  Also, I’ll have to post a 45-second video on my blog extolling the virtues of the Bruins and the city of Boston.

We’ll see what happens…and may the best team win.  Go Canucks Go!

  1. Did you see the photo of the Bruins’ flag outside of the Catholic diocsian building Boston? Could we fly our Canuck outside their building if we win or they could fly their flag outside of 150 Robson?
