Clay’s Canucks Compositions: The Music of 2013

Superstars: Marie Hui and Arielle Tuliao
Superstars: Marie Hui and Arielle Tuliao

One of the ways I express my love for the Vancouver Canucks is by composing songs about the team.  It started back in 2010 when I put together my first Canucks Christmas Carol and over the past three years I’ve written 10 songs that have combined for over 92,000 hits on YouTube.

For 2013, I put together 4 songs:

  • Season of Cup (Our Team, Our Way) – January; 9,300 views on YouTube
  • Under John Tortorella – June; 46,500 views on YouTube
  • Against All Odds (Luongo’s Lament) – October; 4,500 views on YouTube
  • Last Christmas – December; 3,600 views on YouTube

A few quick facts:

-the four videos total 64,000 views on YouTube
-they’ve been featured on CTV, Global TV, the Huffington Post, Beat 94.5, Team 1040, Vancity Buzz, Canucks.com, and more
Marie Hui was gracious enough to appear in all 4 videos, while Arielle Tuliao was in 3 of them.  I know where my views are coming from – no one wants to see a middle-aged guy playing the piano.

I hope these compositions brought a smile to your face; we certainly enjoyed putting them together.  Thanks to everyone who took the time to listen to them and share them.  So whether you watch these as a return visit or you’re seeing them for the first time, I hope you enjoy my Canucks songs from 2013:

1.  Season of Cup (Our Team, Our Way) – January 14, 2013

Our first song of the year celebrated the end of the NHL lockout and the start of a shortened season.  For this song, we worked in the Vancouver Canucks slogan of “Our Team, Our Way” and it was the first time we’ve tackled a song from a musical.  Most exciting for me was that it was the first time that Marie Hui and Arielle Tuliao appeared in one of my songs together.  Needless to say, I was thrilled.

2.  Under John Tortorella – June 28, 2013

This song is a parody of Rihanna’s hit “Umbrella”; the song seemed to be a natural fit for what I wanted to do.  The song garnered mainstream media attention as I detailed in my blog here.  Thanks to the superstar presence of Marie Hui, a popular original song, some catchy if not goofy lyrics, and the city’s curiosity and excitement over new head coach John Tortorella, this is my most popular video on YouTube with close to 47,000 views.

3.  Against All Odds (Luongo’s Lament) – October 6, 2013

Just a couple of days prior to ex-Canuck Cory Schneider returning to Rogers Arena to face his old team, we put together this song to the Phil Collins classic hit.  The goaltending saga in Vancouver had been well-documented over the past few years with the veteran Roberto Luongo and the upstart Cory Schneider battling for control of the crease.  Marie and Arielle sing this song from Bobby Lu’s point of view.

4.  Last Christmas – December 23, 2013

Our 4th annual Canucks Christmas Carol – inspired by Wham! – brought together Marie, Arielle, Joseph, Pat G, Pat T, and our famous foreign exchange student Kevin.  Joseph and Kevin have actually appeared in all 4 Christmas songs, and it’s Kevin who steals the show with his somewhat unsettling whispering of “Ryan Kesler” about a minute into the video.  Regardless, we had a great time spreading some holiday cheer with this fun song.
